Cooking is one of my favorite things to do. I love being able to explore in the kitchen to make things my own. The best part about cooking for you and your family is being able to take a recipe and tweak it to make it your own. The more I cook, the more comfortable I am making a majority of my meals from scratch. While it seems intimidating at first, it gets easier with time. You also start to learn what items are worth making from scratch and what items aren’t worth the time and effort.
If you’re starting out by cooking simple from scratch foods, I highly suggest an easy hot salsa recipe. I love to make a big batch of hot salsa and my family will eat on it throughout the week. There is minimal ingredients and it goes great with all types of foods. The salsa makes a great topping, salad dressing and a snack. We eat a lot of mexican food in our house so this hot salsa doesn’t last long.
My favorite type of salsa is fresh and a bit chunky with a kick of spice. Like any dish you are preparing, make it your own. If you do not have tomatoes, you can use canned. No cilantro? No problem. Give it a taste test and add extra seasonings as needed. This recipe takes 5 minutes or less so add it to the meal plan this week!
5 Minute Hot Salsa Recipe
The easiest and most tasty hot salsa recipe you will find!
Ingredients
- 1 10oz can of of original Rotel (I chose the spicy, instead of the regular)
- 1/2 small onion, chopped
- 1 small clove garlic, smashed
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 14 oz can diced tomato
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 jalapeno
- medium size handful of cilantro
- juice of 1 lime
Instructions
Put all ingredients in the base of a blender and pulse.
You should only have to pulse for about 30 seconds for all the ingredients to become finely chopped and mixed together.
You can pulse more or less depending on the consistency you want your salsa. I like mine more on the chunky side!
Be sure to taste and add seasoning, as needed.
That’s it! It only takes about 5 minutes or less. I usually double up on the recipe so I can eat it throughout the week.

Honey? That’s interesting. I always forget to buy salsa at the store but I’m good about veggies! I’ll have to get the rest of the ingredients next time I go grocery shopping so I won’t have that problem.

Secret Ingredient! 🙂 It’s so good. Let me know if you try it!

Do you have to add jalapenos? Does this taste like most salsas that you can get at Mexican restaurants?
Betsy says
You don’t have to add the jalapenos, I like mine with a little bit of a kick. This is my favorite type of salsa because it doesn’t taste like straight tomato sauce!
