As you’ve probably heard by now, big name discounter Gilt Groupe has left the building. Gilt City, the highly touted website offering high end experiences at a steal has closed shop in Dallas. This closing comes unannounced to many within the company who we quoted as not having any clue this was coming and being “shocked” when the local post was shut down for good. Dallas isn’t the only Gilt City to get the boot, Gilt City has closed offices in six metropolitan areas — San Diego, Houston, Philadelphia, Seattle, Dallas, and Atlanta — effective immediately.
The chopping block came on the cusp of an announcement that the next Dallas Gilt City insider was set to be Tracy Rathbun, culinary counterpart and wife to Chef Kent Rathbun of Blue Plate Kitchen and Abacus fame. Some say the service was set to fail in a town of the infamous ’30,000 millionaires’ who weren’t exactly ready to pony up $1,500 for a Ferrari and dining experience. With all harshness and ill fated talk aside, Gilt City had a good thing going for a while. The site offered free pre-screenings of Hollywood hits, smart shopping & dining deals and even chances for exclusive invites to Big D’s classiest premieres and charity events. For those wondering how those current deals will play out, we hear that the Warehouse Sale at Dallas Contemporary will play out as planned and that all unexpired vouchers will be honored. So enjoy that last Gilt City Dallas experience guys…it’s been nice knowin’ ya!
