My husband and I like to skip town often, we try to venture to place that we haven’t been to before or a place that we’ve never been to together. We knew we wanted to go on a road trip but we only had the weekend to get away, so we decided to jump on Highway 35 and head North to Oklahoma City. I hadn’t been to OKC for many, many years and my husband had never been so we were both stoked for the weekend away.
You can call us hotel snobs and it won’t hurt my feelings because that is what we are. We like to stay at hotels that are really nice and that give us no worries. The last thing I ever want to feel is unsafe while traveling so staying at hotels like Hilton always make me feel comfortable. For the weekend, we booked a hotel at The Skirvin Hilton, a historical Hilton hotel with southwestern charm.
Upon arriving, I knew we made the correct choice. As we entered the hotel, red walls draped the lobby from ceiling to floor. I tried my best to get pictures but they just don’t do it justice. We stayed in a corner room which is my favorite rooms to stay in.Our room was decorated beautifully which great views of the city. One of my favorite things about the room was the large bathroom! Nothing beats a bathroom that you don’t feel like your cramped for space.
We really enjoyed looking at the decorations throughout the first floor of the hotel. Since the hotel first opened in 1911, you can imagine the amount of history that it has.
If you ever google Skirvin Hilton, you will see many reports of the hotel being haunted. My sister stayed at the same hotel a couple years ago and swore she heard doors shutting all night. Thankfully, my husband and I didn’t notice anything.
Curious about the “haunting”? As the story goes, the hotel’s original owner, W. B. Skirvin, had an affair with a maid named “Effie”, which led to a pregnancy. To protect his reputation and avoid a scandal, Skirvin locked the maid on the 10th floor. The maid became depressed and even after the birth of her child, she was still not let out of her room. She eventually jumped out a window killing herself and the baby, without notice in newspapers. In some versions of the legend, this maid is described as “a woman of loose morals,” and men who have stayed in the hotel have reported being propositioned by a female voice while alone in their rooms. Crazy, right?
Don’t let the stories of hauntings keep you away from the Skirvin Hilton. Our hotel was perfect without any hiccups. Since we didn’t know our way around Oklahoma City, we didn’t realize how many places we would be able to walk to from our hotel. The location was great and allowed us to venture around even more than we had planned. We were so bummed that our weekend had to come to an end so after our long drive home, we were exiting to get o our house and I realized I left my laptop on the floor of our hotel room. It was one of those gut wrenching moments because I had deadlines and work to get caught up on. I instantly called the hotel and they connected me to their loss prevention team. I was a bit freaked out because let’s be real, I can’t live without my computer and if I actually lost it for good I would be doomed. Loss prevention told me that nothing had been turned in but they would personally go up to the room and check for me. Within 5 minutes, I received a call back saying they had my laptop and would be sending it to me via fedex first thing on Monday morning. Talk about customer service. Not only did they take all my worries away, they went above and beyond to help me. Their generosity has made me a lifelong customer!
