When you get an email requesting your attendance to shake, mix, and taste the newest Rum to hit town, you take the offer. Shellback Rum invited me to an interactive, hands on mixology experience that launched a six city tour that began in the best city in the country, Dallas.
When I make drinks at home, it’s simple recipes such as Coke and Rum or Malibu and pineapple. I haven’t spent a lot of time perfecting drinks, I usually leave that up to bartenders. Tony Abou-Ganim, The Modern Mixologist, guided our lesson. We were equipped with our own set of bar tools, glassware and all different types of ingredients. We learned the proper techniques for muddling, shaking and serving, all while crafting sophisticated modern updates to classic rum cocktails made with Shellback Rum.
Tony was a great teacher, we taste tested both the Spiced Rum and Silver Rum. Each had strong flavors that had me going back for more. They were smooth and tasted amazing whether it was a shot or mixed with fresh ingredients.
We mixed a few drinks, and got to experiment with different ingredients. Available in two expressions, Silver and Spiced, Shellback Rum is produced at the century-old West Indies Rum Distillery on the island of Barbados, the birthplace of rum. Both expressions are a blend of continuous and pot still components featuring neutral, heavy and aged light rum. Adding further depth to the Spiced blend, a portion of the rum spends a minimum of 12 months in once-used American bourbon barrels. Shellback Rum is available nationally.
Mixing drinks was much more fun than I realized. After scouring the Shellback Rum site, I came across a drink recipe that I had to share.
