Finding Hope for Pediatric Cancer with Hyundai Hope on Wheels

Blog

Thank you, Hyundai Hope on Wheels for sponsoring this post and helping to raise money to #endchildchoodcancer with pediatric cancer research.

I can’t tell you how many times a day, I hear about a company making an impact in our community or donating a certain amount of money to a charity. I love hearing about how big and small companies are helping those in need. As much as I love hearing about all these great deeds, I can’t tell you how much more I love to see it in action.

Did you know? The average age of a child diagnosed with cancer is 6.

I had the opportunity to attend a “Celebration of Life” dinner with Hyundai Hope on Wheels and got to see first hand what Hyundai is doing to help fund research for Pediatric Cancer. Hope on Wheels is one of the largest non-profit funders of pediatric cancer research in the country and has awarded more than $130 million towards childhood cancer since its inception in 1998.

Did you know? Mortality from child cancer was cut in half from 1975 to 2012.

While attending the dinner, all I could think about was my 6 month old baby at home and what I would do if I was told he had pediatric cancer. The families that were in attendance had gone through my worst nightmare and not only were they there cheering on their children and doctors but they had so much hope for the future.

Did you know? Hyundai is one of the largest private funders of research into pediatric cancer.

Hyundai Hope On Wheels awards financial support – in specific fields of research – to Children’s Oncology Group member institutions. Their mission is to find a cure for childhood cancer one handprint at a time. This highly-regarded program seeks to expand the knowledge base for pediatric cancer – and to improve the standards of care. In 2016 alone, Hyundai Hope On Wheels presented more than $13 million in research grants across the United States.

Did you know? Now more than 80% of children with cancer survive.

During the Celebration of Life dinner, $400,000 in grants were awarded:

Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant $250,000
  • Dr. Christopher Porter, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
  • Dr. Julie Wolfson, University of Alabama – Birmingham
Hyundia Young Investigator Grant $150,000
  • Dr. Kathryn Dickerson, UT Southwestern Children’s Medical Center Foundation
  • Dr. Wendy Allen-Rhoades, Texas Children’s Hospital
Before dinner started, we had an open seat available at our table and a lady sat down. As the event went on, she asked each of us at the table what we did and then asked if she could tell us a bit about her story. Of course, we wanted to hear and I’m so glad she shared. Annette Leslie told us about her story with pediatric cancer and how it has affected her life. Her son Carson was diagnosed with medulloblastoma during his middle school years and after 3 short years, cancer took his life. Hearing these raw and real stories are so heavy on the heart but it’s a reminder that this can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime. Research funded from programs like Hyundai Hope on Wheels is what we need to help fight pediatric cancer and keep helping children one handprint at a time.
