RAGTIME The Musical Makes Its Dallas Premiere

Blog· Events

It’s time for another Dallas Summer Musical!

I’ve been missing my musicals, the last one I went to was Little Mermaid and I’ve been dying to go back.  Unfortunately, I didn’t make it to Wicked while it was on tour and I was completely bummed.  The great thing about Dallas Summer Musicals is that they offer so many different musicals, if you miss one there is another always right around the corner. From May 24th through June 5th, RRagtime The Musical is making it’s premiere at Music Hall at Fair Park.Ragtime

Ragtime returns to North America in a striking, all-new touring production from the producing team that most recently brought you The Color Purple and Spamalot. The stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician unfold – set in turn-of-the-century New York – all three united by their desire and belief in a brighter tomorrow. Their compelling stories are set to theater’s richest and most glorious Tony Award®-winning score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens.

Fun Facts about Ragtime:

  • Ran for 834 performances its first time on Broadway.
  • Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who made her debut as director/choreographer of Ragtime, previously worked on Broadway as an assistant to choreographer Lar Lubovitch on the 1998 flop High Society.
  • Six time Tony winner, Audra McDonald was in the original Broadway cast, along with Glee star Lea Michele
  • Songwriters Ahrens & Flaherty wrote the music for 12 broadway shows and been nominated for a Tony Award over 20 times.
  • Also wrote the music for the Fox movie, Anastasia, earning the team 2 Oscar nominations and 2 Golden Globe nominations.
  • The music includes marches, cakewalks, gospel and ragtime and the production is mostly sung-through.
  • Based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow by the same name.
  • According to The New York Times, “The chief competition [for Best Musical at the 1998 Tony Awards] for  The Lion King was Ragtime, a lavish musical.”

Single tickets for RAGTIME, from $20-$99 (pricing subject to change), are now on sale at DallasSummerMusicals.org, by phone at 1.800.514.ETIX (3849) and at The Box Office, 5959 Royal Lane, Suite 542 in Dallas, TX.

Dallas Summer Musicals’ 2016 Season will continue with BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, June 14-26, 2016; and closing the season will be 42ND STREET, June 28 – July 10, 2016. DSM’s highly awaited 2016 – 17 Season Announcement ‘Broadways Most Wanted’ is set to be revealed soon.
