The Perfect Day at Polo On the Lawn

Blog· Events

A day full of Minut Juleps, big hats and gorgeous sun dresses is what I encountered at Polo on the Lawn. I have celebrated Derby Day before (at a bar) but nothing like I experienced at the Prestonwood Polo Club.

We made the drive to Oak Point, Tx where the Polo match took place. We arrived and I was shocked at how big the Polo field was. The playing field is 300 yards long by 160 yards wide, which equates to the area o nine American football fields!

We were lucky enough to enjoy box seating during the match, which I would highly recommend. The seats were perfect to view everything going on in the pavilion, on the field and made for great people watching since everyone had to walk past our box to get to the pavilion. Under the pavilion you could find mint juleps, an auction and a live painting in action. The auction had an array of items ranging from tickets to the Dallas Arboretum to the cutest Tory Burch purse. There was truly something for everyone.

There were plenty of delicious mint juleps to go around. Instead of the traditional mint julep that is made with bourbon, these were made with Gin. They had so much flavor and I enjoyed the change.

Once half time came around, it was time for the ever so popular divot stomp. To make things better, this one involved champagne! A divot stomp is when spectators are invited to go on to the playing field to take part in “divot stomping.” this long-standing tradition allows participants to help replace mounds of divots that are torn up by the horses hooves and socialize with one another.  Champagne was served to all who who participated.

I’ve always wanted to attend a polo match and participate in a divot stomp. Polo on the Lawn provided the perfect afternoon for friends and family to get together to celebrate the Kentucky Derby.  The weather was perfect and I had great company. I couldn’t have asked for a better day.
