The Ultimate Mom Hack: DIY Diaper Genie Refills

Blog· Family

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Hippo Sak® for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Being a mom has been the most fulfilling job I have ever had. It’s a thankless job but so rewarding in more ways than I can count. Before having a baby, I always heard how expensive it was to raise a child. There are so many expenses that come with you sweet bundle of joy so I’m always finding a way to cut cost anyways that I can.

One necessity that we have is the diaper pail. While it’s not on everybody’s “must have list,” it is on ours. We own two and they are constantly full since we have a growing little boy. If you’re unfamiliar the diaper pail is a product specifically made for diaper containment is designed to tightly seal in the odors created by baby in a way that normal kitchen trash cans cannot. It keeps the diaper packed away so the smell is hidden and you don’t have to walk in the room smelling the lovely presents your child has given you throughout the week.

While I love our diaper pail, buying refills for it every other week gets old and expensive. It’s approximately $14 for a pack of 2 diaper pails. Since we have 2 diaper pails and we go through a pack each bi weekly, we’re spending almost $30 a month on the refills which is a lot of money to pay for a diaper holder.

I wanted to find a way to cut costs, so I made my own diaper genie refills. Not only do they cost a fraction of the cost, they work beautifully! It makes me giddy to think about the money I’m saving and being able to solve a small problem we were having. Curious how I did it? Find the steps below for  my DIY Diaper Pail Refills, it’s so simple and using a product that you already have at home!

This will not only save you money but will mark one thing off of your list of things at the store because I use something you already buy regularly – trash bags! I highly suggest using Hippo Sak® Trash Bags for these diaper pail refills. They are the perfect size and the handles make it possible to fit perfectly into the existing refill.

The only items you need to make this work is your diaper pail, an empty refill cartridge and a 13 gallon Hippo Sak Tall Kitchen Bag.  If you are purchasing a diaper pail for the first time, it will come with a cartridge that you will be able to use so don’t feel the need to go buy any. You can find the Hippo Sak Tall Kitchen Bags at your local grocer, Find Hippo Saks near you.

First, you will need to take 1 trash bag and open it completely. Find one handle and insert it into one hole in your diaper pail cartridge. If you are having problems getting it in the hole, take the end and twist it tightly to fit. Make sure you are inserting the trash bag into the hole from the bottom.

Once you have the trash bag in the hole, pull up approximately 6 inches. Then repeat on the other side of the cartridge with the hole that is directly across the first one you used.

Now that you have the bag handles inserted, you will need to stuff the handles into the small opening located around the diaper refill.

Once you have the handles tucked away, take the opening of the trash bag and tuck in the opening of the trash bag in where the handles are tucked away.

Once your have the opening of the trash bag tucked away, turn your refill around and this is what it should look like.

Now take your hand and put it in the hole opening. Grab the trash bag and pull it all the way through. This is what the top of your diaper pail refill will look like.

The only thing left to do is insert your refill! Take the long bag that is hanging down and push it through the top opening of your diaper pail.

Open up your diaper pail and pull the trash bag all the way through until your diaper pail cartridge clicks into the top.

Push down the diaper genie cartridge lock and you are all done!

This is the ultimate mom hack when it comes to saving time and money. I love using the Hippo Sak trash bags because they have the perfect size handles to not only fit the diaper pail but also when I use them in my trash can, they are so easy to transport out to our outdoor dumpster.

The Hippo Sak trash bags also have a Powerstrip™ that prevents tears, leaks and holes. The last thing I want or need is a leaky trash can, especially when I’m transporting dirty diapers!  Get Hippo Saks on Amazon.  You won’t be disappointed.
