Your Home Away From Home: Crooked Tree Coffee

Dallas Coffee Shops

On Routh Street in Uptown Dallas, there’s a little gray house. If not for the sign in the front yard, it could be a small family home. Inside it feels just as homey, with warm yellow walls and an eclectic assortment of furniture. If you’ve ever wanted a coffee shop in your living room, Crooked Tree Coffee can give you the next best thing: a living room in a coffee shop.

Menu

Crooked Tree has some of the best coffee in town. Much of their coffee is locally roasted fair trade coffee from Oak Cliff Coffee Roasters, so you know it’s fresh. The baristas are knowledgeable and take the time to get your coffee right. Their food menu includes sandwiches and chips, as well as vegan pastries from Little Eden Bakery. The pastries may be vegan, but you would never know by the taste of them. The cookies are also quite good. Like Pearl Cup, it’s a place to sit and enjoy your coffee, not just a place to get a caffeine infusion.

Atmosphere

Walking into Crooked Tree is like walking into a good friend’s house. There are three small rooms filled with mismatched furniture. The walls are brightly painted, featuring designs from local artists. It feels like the kind of place you’d find on back street in a hippie college town, but it’s right in the middle of Uptown Dallas. As far as atmosphere goes, it is one of the best places in the Metroplex. The only downside is the patio, or lack thereof. Crooked Tree is on a very small lot with little room for a proper patio. They put a couple of tables out back, but it’s not the most comfortable place to work or relax. Still, the inside alone makes it all worthwhile.

Amenities

Crooked Tree is a popular coffee shop in which to plant yourself with a laptop and a stack of work, but it’s also a nice place to relax with friends and listen to some quiet indie music. Occasionally, Crooked Tree has live music, too. If you’re looking for a nice, relaxing night, it’s the place to be, assuming you can find a seat. And once the show’s over, you can always walk over to one of the dozens of bars in the area. Of course, like most of the places in Uptown, parking can be difficult. Your best bet is to find a parallel parking spot on Routh or State Street, and walk the rest of the way over.

If you’re going to Crooked Tree, plan to stick around a while. You may very well end up with a coffee cup from some post-KGB agency. You may end up having a nice chat with a young German couple. You may even get your work done and have fun doing it. But no matter what happens, you’ll certainly enjoy the experience.
