I”m fortunate enough that my fiance and I are able to go on date nights often. We are able to do what we please since we both work for ourselves and don’t have any children. One thing that I have noticed is that we go on a lot of casual dates, not that type of dates that you get dressed up and think about all week long. I’m not complaining, but sometimes I would much rather enjoy a nice dining experience at a delicious spot rather than a restaurant that I feel like I’m being rushed out of. This week we got to go on one of those special date nights and I’m counting down the days til we get to do it again.
We made reservations at The Grill on the Alley. I had been there a few times for lunch and media events but never for a regular dining experience at dinner so I was more than excited. Quinn had never been there and I had no doubt in my mind that he would love it.
Our appetizer was simple to decide on. We wanted everything they had to offer and thankfully the special of the day gave us just that. The special of the day was the Seafood Trio which included a Jumbo Crab Cake with Beurre Blanc Sauce, Grilled Shrimp, and Pan-seared sea scallop with Orange Fennel Beurre Blanc Sauce. The Trio allowed us to get a taste of three appetizers that we wanted. My favorite of the three was the sea scallop, the Orange Fennel Beurre Blanc Sauce was paired perfectly with the scallop.
I had previously learned about their surf and turf special and knew immediately that is what I wanted. The Surf & Turf Special is available only on weeknights (Monday – Thursday) through Thursday, July 17. The generous plate includes an 8 oz. Filet Mignon cooked to order with half of a Lobster Tail, all for just $44! It’s a complete steal so I took advantage of the opportunity.
It didn’t sound like tons of food but once it had arrived, I quickly realized I ordered more than I could eat. Thankfully, Quinn had originally wanted to order the Surf & Turf but decided on another plate so we could share our meals.
Quinn ordered the Dover Sole which comes from the English Channel. It’s a fish that you don’t see often on any (Dallas) menus so we gave it a try.
I eat fish a few times a week and I’m always looking for different types to add to my diet and the Dover Sole won me over. It had a much thicker than most white fish that I eat which I liked. It filled me up without making me feel like I ate a heavy meal. All meals come with your choice of creamed spinach, broccolini or mashed potatoes. Along with our sides, we saw that they had loaded mac & cheese and had to order it. (Seriously, never pass up the chance to order Mac & Cheese!)
I couldn’t stop eating the mac & cheese. It was the perfect amount of creamy and the mushrooms and bacon took it up a notch. Be sure to order this next time you’re there, it’s huge and feeds at least 3 people!
Date night couldn’t be complete without dessert. I’m not a huge dessert person but I love to try all types of sweets. The chocolate banana cream pie was their special of the day and I’m so glad that is what we chose. The pie was at least 1.5 inches thick and full of flavor. The cinnamon and caramel drizzle completed the banana cream pie. It satisfied my taste buds.
Next time you have a date night planned, think outside the box. Don’t settle for the same restaurant that you go to every Friday night. Spend a little extra money and enjoy your time together. Our date night was a complete success. The food was outstanding, our waiter was diligent and the chef exceeded out expectations. Make reservations at The Grill on the Alley and redesign your date night.

That surf and turf looks amazing, but I really want to try that mac-n-cheese! I know where I am going for our next date night! Thanks for sharing!
Now that’s worth dressing up for. I’d order the English Channel too – it’s looks so good. Glad you two go on dates like these – keep doing it even after kids are here!!!
Woah Nelly, that food looks so good. What a great place for date night 🙂
That’s nice that you got to taste a sampling with the three different appetizers. I could surely go for a taste of chocolate banana cream pie, let me tell you!
That shrimp looks divine! I’d be happy to head here for dinner! 🙂
Everything looks delish! I’m a big fan of scallops too, but won’t eat them just anywhere. Definitely looks like generous portion sizes too. And it’s always great when you go back to a restaurant you’ve only done via events and see that menu and service is as amazing as it was during the event. (that doesn’t always happen!)

Wow, this all looks amazing! What a fun date night. 🙂
The food looks amazing! I’m married with a young child, so date nights are a little less frequent and fancy. 🙂
Wow, everything looks absolutely amazing! I love casual dates, but I love intentional dates even better. Sounds like a perfect night!

Enjoy date nights with no restraints while you can! Once you have kids they are harder to plan out but still very important!
