After attending a media luncheon yesterday, I reckon Lisa Garza’s gem ‘Sissy’s Southern Country Kitchen’ will be like sweet molasses glue to the Dallas dining scene. The spacious sunlit, climate-controlled patio could serve as the setting for your new favorite brunch spot, as the gleaming white wooden accents lend themselves to a ‘time stands still’ state of mind.
The main dining parlor is preppy and welcoming. The long bar is outfitted with glass jugs filled with Sissy’s sinful Belvedere tea bar cocktails and a seat for you and yours to enjoy some low country eats. And eat we did on this glorious afternoon filled with dish after dish from the collaborative minds of Lisa Garza and Jeffery Hobbs down home memory lane. With crowd pleasers like Angel Biscuits with a spread trio (pimento based, ham salad and a pickled chow chow), Deviled eggs with tobiko caviar and Pickled Gulf Shrimp…Sissy’s starters are a bang. That’s after you get your hands on one of their hand crafted tea cocktails or Tequila Sipper with heavy lemongrass and hibiscus influences. While you peruse the family style menu, get your hands on some Low Country Gumbo or Sissy’s soon-to-be-famous Grandmas Layered Salad…Sissy’s is like a family picnic from your dreams where everyone knows how to cook and those tacky family matching outfits get a country couture upgrade.
Having spent time during her childhood in Memphis, Garza wanted to bring those southern flavors to a fun dining experience for Dallas diners to enjoy and indulge no matter what day. The fried chicken knocked me on my butt, with a tangy buttermilk soaked base and a crispy buttery pressure fried coating…you just can’t skip. Other mains include Beef Short Ribs, Obligatory Shrimp and Grits with Tasso ham and Pan Seared Sea Bass. Share some Squash Puppies, collard green confit or sweet butter whipped potatoes and your sure to make friends, better ones.
After a hearty southern meal you couldn’t possibly have room for dessert right? Wrong. Order the ‘Better than sex chocolate cake’ of Bourbon Bread Pudding. Dreams come true, and between Lisa and Hobbs…it’s a beautiful match.
Sissy’s opens for business this Monday February 27th for dinner and coming soon will be serving brunch 6 DAYS A WEEK.
