If you know anything about me, it’s that I love Mexican food. Sometimes my sister and I joke that maybe our dad really is Mexican and not Japanese because our love for Mexican food is a little extreme. I stand by the idea that there is no such thing as too much Mexican food. We’re in Texas, how can you not eat it all the time?
Chips and Salsa are my true love and I like to choose Mexican restaurants depending how good their salsa is. I can seriously make a meal out of it. Recently Uncle Julio’s introduced some new menu items and whenever fajitas or guacamole are involved, I have to check it out. I ventured to their Allen location for a change of scenery and had one of the best meals I have had in the longest time.
To start our meal off, we ordered the table side guacamole. A waiter came to our table, and prepared the guacamole within a few minutes. Only fresh ingredients were put into our appetizer, such as tomatoes, cilantro, jalapenos, onions and lime juice. He asked if we had any special requests or items that we did not want in the guacamole which I appreciated. Once he was done, it was served in this amazing molcajete that is carved into the shape of a pig.
Everybody at the table gravitated to the guacamole. It was so fresh and full of flavor. Not only was it a great appetizer but it’s a great dish to order that will go with all meals on the menu. Who ever said you could only eat guac before the meal? We ate every last bit of it throughout the meal.
Uncle Julio’s has always been known for their fajitas. My family used to go to Uncle Julio’s off of the Tollway on special occasions and order the largest fajitas that were available and share it. No matter how many people would be joining us for dinner, there was always enough food to go around.
We wanted to try one of the new fajitas and couldn’t decide which one so decided on two; Shrimp al pastor and filet mignon fajitas. Yes, you read that right – Uncle Julio’s now has filet mignon fajitas!
The Shrimp al Pastor fajitas were packed full of flavor. The shrimp is seared and tossed with pineapple and a mango habanero sauce then served over julienne vegetables. One of my favorite things about the shrimp fajitas is that it is either served with corn tortillas or lettuce! We chose the lettuce and made the most delicious lettuce wraps with the shrimp (and guacamole, of course).
The filet mignon fajitas did not disappoint either. We ordered the fajitas for one since I knew they usually served more than advertised.
The fajitas were served over onions and peppers and with a tequila sunrise sauce that complimented the meat perfectly. The filet mignon fajitas were served with flour tortillas and a side of rice and beans. To give you a better picture of how much food was served, we ordered those 3 items for 4 people and we had left overs to take home.
There is one thing for sure – you can’t eat at Uncle Julio’s without getting the Cajeta for dessert.
When my table asked what the Cajeta was, I described it as fried ice cream. It’s toasted coconut, pecans, wrapped around vanilla ice cream laying in a bed house-made caramel sauce and topped with whipped cream. It’s more than worth the $7, trust me.
Next time you’re on the hunt for some good food, head to Uncle Julio’s and try out their new menu items. You won’t be disappointed.

What a deliciously decadent meal! I could devour all of that right now – love that you could choose a lighter option with the lettuce leaves instead of wraps!
